If I have a night out or night away .... I mention it to her .... put it on the calender

 

then a few nights before I have to mention it again .... followed by more questions

 

then on the night I will be getting ready and she'll say she 'oh , I forgot you were going out'

 

depending on circumstance I may go through general huffiness each time 

 

 

 

I will say she is far better now than a couple of years ago or when the kids were really young

I was going to say the same thing!

Best option is to offer to do the shopping, I find! Ok, it takes a bit of effort, but you can easily stretch it to 2 hours of wandering around on your own!
