The main reasons why I took the Bills were on one hand Sammy Watkins and on the other hand a good defence built around defensive rookie of the year Kiko Alonso.
Now after 4 Years, I learnt that Sammy for sure was a great receiver for my team, but in the long term missing that first Round Pick in the first draft really damaged my progress. Also my defence confirmed that they were a good defence, even though Kiko never developed like he should have and other players became the centre of this defence.
A big part of the lack of development by Kiko was me not understanding how to use game prep efficient. This game prep also lead to me more or less wasting my first season with the Bills and don’t develop my young core of players
But the offence really was my biggest issue for me during my 3 seasons. In my opinion it all started at QB, however both Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller never produced any productive numbers. The addition of a new QB and Knowshone Moreno who replaced Jackson at Halfback, in year 2 didn’t bring any change.
That was when I noticed that perhaps the productivity of these players was due to the one thing that both the QB & HB have in common, the O-line. While slowly improving my O-line my whole offence started to improve. Although this proved too late for Manuel, Spiller and notably Moreno, who came to Buffalo as most expensive Free agent in the first offseason and left Buffalo 2 years later after he was cut!
The biggest move on the defensive side of the ball saw was the departure of Super Mario Williams, who had to leave Buffalo in offseason 2. This was due to the salary cap putting immense pressure on the team.
Now to my draft picks and who made an impact on my team:
QB Chandler McGee: McGee was drafted with my first Pick of the Draft in the 2nd Round. In year 2 I switched between him and EJ. Manuel for the Starting QB role. Both weren’t great, but McGee won the starting position in his Sophmore year and developed to a solid starter for the Bills.
CB Wilfred Lattimore: Lattimore was drafted in the 3rd Round and became a solid Nickelback for the Bills.
LT Conner Fitzgerald: Fitzgerald was Picked 8th Overall by the Bills and was the first Step for the Bills to improve their Oline. He was an instant starter and together with Glenn the Bills had now 2 Star Tackles on the edge.
Draft 2017 (or why is the last draft always to be the best?):
C Vinny Duncan & RG Zane Haden: Duncan 10th Overall and Haden 28th
Overall both of these picks were big needs at this point. The already not very good interior Oline was not in good shape in that offseason with no legit starters. The addition of these 2, suddenly the O-line looked really good. (Next step would be to replace the decreasing Carl Nicks in the next offseason).
WR Jaylen Levingston:
Levingston was picked early in the second Round, and really fast became the Fan favourite of this Rookie Class, if not even from this Team. He led the team in receiving in his rookie season and is one of the finalists for offensive Rookie of the Year in the AFC.
After 4 years now I finally feel like this team is on the right road and could have some success for the future. After year 3 I was at a low point where I thought I failed the project and was happy that this franchise soon ends.
But now after the whole Season 4 and Sammy Watkins new deal for the next 6 years, this team looks like a future Playoff contender. It’s sad to leave them at this Point; however this season gave me the motivation for another rebuilding Project in Madden 16, which I hopefully will lead a bit sooner to success.
